The new year is one of the times we reflect on the past, notice the present, and plan for the future. I’m doing all of those things right now with hope for the year ahead.
After working nearly nonstop since serving Whoppers as a kid, I decided to take a six week sabbatical, including photography and yoga workshops in India and Spanish language immersion in Mexico. I’m currently in Oaxaca. My husband and I rang in the new year at the central square (zócalo) with local residents and people from all over the world.
For our family, as for many, 2024 was a mix of ups and downs. I imagine 2025 will be much the same. There is so much that we cannot control. I’m getting closer to being at peace with that part of the human condition. At the same time, I am recommitting to living with intentionality — to making choices about how to spend my time, grow and offer my talents, and share and invest my resources in ways that are rooted in my values. Values that guide who and how I want to be. Values like joy, justice, community, and adventure.
In this spirit, I’ve made a printable calendar we will use in our home to guide our days and months. At the bottom of each month is a set of some of our shared values. There will be goals, and activities, and to-dos, for sure. Maybe even some resolutions. But I’m especially excited about seeing those values every day and drawing on them to make choices that are within my control in 2025.
I can’t wait to print out the pages, put them up in the kitchen, and begin filling them up — while leaving plenty of space for getting rest, and sometimes saying “yes” to what may come.
Soon I’ll have more to say about this time “off” and what’s new for me on the work front in 2025.
For now, I encourage you to reflect on the values that guide who you want to be and how you want to show up in the world, and to make a plan to put those values into action in the months ahead.
